What is carrier screening?

The Pregnancy Prep Scan inspects thousands of key changes within your DNA, known as mutations. A positive result means that you are a carrier of a genetic disease. Even healthy people without any family history of genetic disease can be carriers of mutation in their body. If both parents are carriers of the same disease, they can give birth to a child with symptoms.
Passed on via generations
It is exciting to think about the traits your children might inherit from you and your partner. Will they have your mother’s eyes, your grandfather’s intellect, your partner’s sense of humor or your smile? Most of all, we hope for a healthy baby. The Pregnancy Prep Scan looks at your DNA for serious genetic diseases that you can unknowingly pass to your future children, even if everyone in your family is completely healthy. Genesis gives you access to information about health issues that you may not be aware of. This enables you to take action towards a healthy growing family.
Many carriers are healthy
You are a “carrier” if you test positive for a condition on the Pregnancy Prep Scan. Many carriers of genetic diseases are healthy — what is most important to find out is whether both you and your partner are carriers of the same disease. In such a case, you would face a 1 in 4 (or 25%) chance with every pregnancy to have a child with symptoms. Most disorders on the Pregnancy Prep Scan are inherited this way, making the results very useful in preparing for a family. You may also learn, in rare cases, that you personally have an elevated risk for symptoms of a mild disease, like G6PD. However, in most cases, you will simply learn whether you are a healthy carrier.
